The good news continues as we drop down to the 1080p Blu-ray of Looper. The picture is sharp and detailed and the A90J avoids exaggerating the picture noise in the way some sets do. It’s brighter and punchier than we’re accustomed to, but in a way feels unforced. The picture really pops but the frequent dark scenes are also full of nuance. Part of the Cognitive Processor XR, XR Sound Positioning works to sync the sound to the correct part of the image, as accurately as possible. XR Surround with 3D Surround Upscaling takes a regular audio signal and creates a virtual surround sound effect – making you feel more immersed in the action. The Sony X90J has a good color gamut, but it's just short of the required 67% Rec. 2020 coverage to be considered a wide color gamut. It's lower than the Sony X900H, although the difference is pretty small and isn't noticeable. It's very difficult to tell that it doesn't have a wide gamut just by looking at an image. We measured this multiple times with different settings and picture modes, and we also compared it side-by-side with the Sony X80J, with both TVs receiving the same 4k, 4:2:2, 10-bit signal through an HDMI splitter. We took the readings with a colorimeter and spectroradiometer set up three feet from the TV, and we also took a spectrum reading, which you can see here. The results were the same. We measured a wide color gamut by lowering the stimulus received, but HDR is meant to be watched with a bright image.
Deadpool also looks excellent on the A90J, with the red of Deadpool’s costume appearing vivid under the overcast light of the opening scene. The burning lab fight shows off the TV’s strong contrast, with shadow details coming through clearly in the darkness against the bright light of the flames. Improvements have been made to the OLED panel, too. Sony has introduced an aluminium sheet that essentially acts as a heatsink, allowing for increased brightness and, though Sony hasn’t confirmed it, it’s believed that the A90J uses the same next-gen ‘OLED Evo’ panel as LG’s G1, which itself boasts higher brightness than OLED TVs before it. It’s also worth noting that while the A90J sounds good by TV standards, we’d still recommend partnering it with a separate sound system. Unlike the vast majority of TVs, you’ll need to spend a fair amount to improve the A90J's sound significantly – a Sonos Arc at least – but it’s well worth it if you want the sound quality to match the picture. The color gamut and volume have changed slightly. The Sony A90J can nearly take full advantage of the Xbox Series S|X consoles. It only supports Dolby Vision gaming at 60Hz, not at 120Hz, though, and the TV doesn't support 1440p @ 120Hz. After a firmware update to version PKG6.5660.0668NAA, the TV now supports both VRR and ALLM.
The most variation is with the 10% windows, which are significantly brighter than the rest. If that bothers you, you can disable the Peak Luminance setting. With it off, we measured the real scene brightness at 442 cd/m². Scenes are more consistent, with most windows measuring between 468 cd/m² and 479 cd/m², but there's some frame dimming in the 2% windows, with both peak and sustained at around 349 cd/m². We suggest leaving Peak Brightness on if you want the brightest screen possible with an accurate image.Not only is the Sony A90J one of the best picture performers we’ve tested, it also sounds superb by TV standards. Because the sound genuinely comes from the screen, audio and video are tied together far more effectively than from most TVs. In Blade Runner 2049, as K (Ryan Gosling) takes his baseline test, there’s a rare directness to the delivery. At the same time, the A90J’s virtualised surround sound adds space to the presentation so that the reverberations of the room and the disembodied voice of the interrogating officer stretch beyond the confines of the set itself. Retested 1080p VRR range to see if there were still the same issues with latest firmware, and changed the PS5 VRR test to 'Yes' because it supports it.
